The Hub provides a flexible space for young people (~12+) to gather and learn together in our workshops and events, or to connect with online providers and learn together.

The Hub is a place where innovative learning experiences can be enjoyed and developed;  a community of life long, life wide, life deep learners. There out-of-school setting supports parents by supplementing the learning taking place at home and elsewhere.

GCSE ART/PHOTOGRAPHY

GCSE Art is taught over two years and divided into 2 components - a coursework portfolio and an externally set task (the exam)

Both of these units of work will offer the opportunity to explore different genres of art, such as portraiture and still life, and to demonstrate these using a range of techniques and materials. In the early part of the first year, we will aim to build up each learner’s skill base within the Fine Arts, primarily within painting, drawing and print-making. As the course progresses, an increasingly independent and refined technical and conceptual response will be encouraged. Skills will develop throughout the course, getting students experimenting with lots of processes and ready to sit their exam the following year.

The coursework portfolio counts for 60% of their final GCSE grade and the exam counts for 40% of their final GCSE grade. Gemma Lane is a registered tutor with 3A tutors . The students will receive their exam paper during the second year of the course on 1st January and will have between 10-12 weeks to respond to an exam theme before sitting the exam at the end of March/beginning of April.

Students completing GCSE Art will need to attend 1 x 1.5 hour in person lesson a week and 1 x one hour online lessons a week. This is recommended to keep in line with what students are receiving in mainstream. However we can tailor the sessions to the needs of the student and parent.

The collaboration with Bristol Streams Hub includes one hour online each week as a small group followed by an in person meet up each half term.

The exam board is with OCR, the exam itself will be held at 3A Tutors in Bristol and lessons will be held at Gemma Lane’s home in North Somerset or if with Bristol Stream Hub, one lesson online and one lesson in person termly venue to be confirmed in Bristol.

ART/PHOTOGRAPHY

This course is based over 2 years and will encourage your child to develop their artistic and creative responses to a range of subject matter and themes. Whether your main interest is in painting, clay modelling or design, the course can be adapted to suit your creative interests and skills. Over the two years you will be expected to plan, resource and develop projects in an increasingly independent manner, showing that you can work meaningfully with a number of different media to communicate your ideas. You will also explore the use of drawing for different purposes, using a variety of methods and media.

There are two units of work to complete in each year. In Year 13 these are ‘Component 1: Personal Investigation’ and ‘Component 2: Externally Set Assignment’. During the Personal Investigation you are required to conduct a practical investigation into an idea, issue, concept or theme supported by written material (between 1000-3000 words). The Externally Set Assignment is published by OCR on 1st February of each year, and following a preparatory period of work you will undergo a 15- hour (3 day) supervised exam, during which you will culminate your investigation.
